Dr. Teitz received her Bachelor of Science degree from Tel Aviv University, Israel majoring in Chemistry. She received her graduate degree in Biochemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Dan Canaani at the Tel Aviv University. She continued to do post doc training with Dr. Yuet Wai Kan at the UCSF Medical School at San Francisco and continued her work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC. She joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis TN at 1998, where she worked on neuroblastoma and molecular mechanisms of cell death in childhood tumors. In 2012, she joined Dr. Jian Zuo’s group at St. Jude Children’s Hospital to develop studies on drug therapy for hearing loss. Dr. Teitz joined the faculty at Creighton University in April 2018, where she is currently building a research group to identify and develop drugs for prevention of hearing loss.

Hearing loss and our researchHearing loss has a huge impact on our society. 360 million people worldwide are affected by hearing loss caused by aging, noise, cisplatin toxicity and other insults. No FDA-approved drugs exist to date to treat or prevent hearing loss. We develop high-throughput cell-based screening tools to identify potential compounds for treating hearing loss and test the compounds for protection against cisplatin in cochlear explants and against cisplatin, noise and aging in animal models. Mechanistically, we develop molecular assays and animal models to understand the biology of death and survival of the inner ear cells after various insults. Our goal is to identify potential compounds that can be tested pre-clinically and clinically in humans for treating hearing loss.
